THE MARCH |
Dear Researcher:
During the past year, the cancer community came together in an unprecedented fashion to identify the extraordinary opportunities and needs in our research enterprise. We must act now to deal successfully with the looming cancer crisis that this nation faces in the coming millennium. The March Research Task Force Report, which is included in this issue of Stem Cells addresses what it will take to expedite the conquest of cancer. The report delineates investments in basic and translational research; public education priorities; cancer prevention and control efforts; and incentives for creating and advancing research partnerships among government, academia and industry. The development of this report was a major undertaking and everyone who participated has made a major contribution to push the frontier of achievement in cancer research.
The vision outlined in these initiatives must be realized in order to address the burden of cancer in the 21st Century. None of these objectives, however, will be realized unless the cancer research community takes this report to the next stepeducating Congress. Without the passionate support of the Congress, the resources specified and the programmatic objectives outlined in this report will not be possible. In order to create that passion in the Congress, each of you must enlist as a "foot soldier" to educate your elected representatives about cancer, cancer research priorities, and what the serious impact will be on this Nation if we fail to act on the recommendations of this report.
I urge each of you to become actively involved in this effort; tomorrow's patients are counting on you.
Sincerely,
