Young Turks Forum—for the Young and Young at Heart

Curt I. Civin, M.D., Editor-in-Chief

In 1985, Marshall Lichtman, a charter member of STEM CELLS' Editorial Board, suggested that we encourage the publication of concise reviews authored by leaders in their fields. The goal was not only to summarize, but moreover to excite a broad and fertile field of facts and notions dealing with cell differentiation and proliferation. Since that time, STEM CELLS has been well known for its Concise Review series. Many have become benchmark summaries and continue to serve readers, whether neophytes or experts, as a reference and as a teaching tool. For the expert who is highly focused in a particular area, these reviews may serve to enhance the integration of their interest with basic research and applied clinical studies.

In 1992, 29 of these concise reviews were updated and, along with three new ones, were compiled and bound into the volume entitled, Concise Reviews in Clinical and Experimental Hematology.

In the foreword to this volume, Marshall Lichtman wrote:

"These reviews are written by scholars with personal interests and experiences, often of long-standing, in the specific areas under discussion. They have through their own research made significant contributions to our understanding A) of the natural linkage between the genes for growth factors and their receptors and oncogenicity, on the one hand, and B) the extranatural linkage between the gene cloning and the expression of these genes in vector cystoma, permitting the production of growth factors for in vitro study and for therapeutic use, on the other hand. This remarkable duality of the outcome of the application of molecular biology techniques, although perhaps inadvertent, is the central underlying theme of this volume."

Since this volume, STEM CELLS has published critical concise reviews as a regular journal feature with, as Donald Metcalf, one of the Journal's Founding Fathers, says, speed and precision that "outpaces the cyber superhighway."

In keeping with this concise review series, and in my new role as Editor-in-Chief, I am very pleased to announce the formation of a new section entitled "A Forum for Young Turks" devoted to provocative proposals for new research directions from young investigators. In so doing, my hope is that STEM CELLS will provide our readers with not only wisdom and concise review, but also the challenging stimulation of new ideas, interpretations, and opinions. Some of the contributions we decide to publish may not be fully elucidated. These pieces will be handled with the experience that the best questions are often the most naïve ones. In such cases, we may also recruit responses from other experts, perhaps in a point-counterpoint format. Our overall endeavor will be to nurture rather than extinguish creative sparks from the highly trained biologists who may just be entering our field. Please note that my only definition of "Young" in "Young Turks" will be that you provide challenging young thoughts. And so I personally encourage and look forward to provocative proposals for new research initiatives from the young and young at heart.
